ESPN college pick em picks 1-5

(1) Army over Cincinnati:

Look, I know Cincinnati is a good team, but so is Army. In a season where discipline and execution matter more than usual, you have to go with the more disciplined team. That’s Army. This is going to be a close game, and if Cincinnati is able to jump out early, they’ll win. I just like Army to slow it down enough to win. Remember, they scared the bejesus out of Oklahoma and Michigan on the road over the last two years. Cincinnati is not either of those teams.

(2) Iowa State over TCU:

I’m really on the fence about this one. Honestly, the only reason I have the Cyclones is that they have played a live game already. In the early going, teams that have already played a game have generally looked more polish. There was no polish on the Cyclones in their first game, but hey, a game is a game. TCU has an unproven QB and a questionable defense.

(3) Louisiana over Georgia Southern:

The Cajuns are finally at home in Lafayette for a game. They had all they could handle with Georgia State last week and the Eagles are likely better than their arch-rival. I just think Louisiana finds a way to get it done in front of the (sparse) home crowd.

(4) South Carolina over Tennessee:

So, Tennessee is ranked, huh? Why? Jarrett Guarantano may have made the proverbial leap, but I’ll believe it when I see it. On the other hand, we know South Carolina has a defense and can run the ball. Colorado State transfer Collin Hill is a really good quarterback in case you haven’t see him play. And if Hill fails, well, Ryan Hilinski has proven he’s capable of handling the team as well. I see the Vols’ early season woes continuing here.

(5) Auburn over Kentucky:

I really had no intention of putting this one this high, but things happen. Auburn is the better team, but that Kentucky defense is nasty. I think Auburn’s offense is going to look better in year 2 of Bo Nix, but they’re going to have a rough go of it here. I just don’t know if I see Kentucky’s offense doing the things it did last year without Lynn Bowden. Advantage: Auburn.
