Early college football DFS picks October 3: Wreck em Tech!
By Mike Marteny
College football DFS quarterback picks October 3:
Top Tier:
Sam Ehlinger gets the slight edge over Kyle Trask because of running ability, but you really can’t go wrong with Trask either. South Carolina will provide a little more resistance than Ole Miss did. I’ll pay for Ehlinger first in a much easier matchup for him. Trask may have the best arm of the upper tier though.
Don’t sleep on Brady White. SMU’s defense is once again a sore spot and Memphis has shown they are going to throw more this year. The bad news is that Memphis hasn’t played in almost a month. If they come out sloppy, SMU could capitalize. I’m still not paying that much for Buechele with other really good options quite a bit cheaper than he is.
Desmond Ridder could wind up as one of the highest scorers on this slate. South Florida was carved up by the Irish in their only meaningful game. I do expect more work for Doaks and the running backs, but Ridder should be in for a solid game.
Middle Tier:
If you expect the Aggies to hang with Alabama, this could be a good game for Mac Jones. If you don’t, he’s not going to be worth the price. Alan Bowman is cheaper for some reason and is going to put up big numbers on Kansas State. Their defense wont be able to force Bowman into the mistakes that Rattler made. Bowman is the best of the middle tier by a long shot.
Or is he? Tyler Wilson is in for a treat against Ole Miss, a team that was just shredded through the air by Kyle Trask. The Ole Miss run defense was solid, but Florida scorched him through the air. Wilson is good enough to do that and has enough weapons to have a strong day. Don’t expect six touchdowns, but three looks likely.
Why play roulette with the health of Hendon Hooker when you can have Charlie Brewer? His price plummeted because he was used sparingly in the blowout win over Kansas. Baylor knows what they have in Brewer. Holding an open audition for the backs was the way to go in that scrimmage. Here though, the Bears are going to have to turn Brewer loose to beat West Virginia. Expect that to happen. Brewer looks like a nice bargain here in the middle.
Matt Corral didn’t have a timeshare with John Rhys Plumlee in this one. In fact, he looked good carving up the Florida secondary. With Ole Miss having to throw against Kentucky, he could be in for a nice game here.
Bargain Shoppers:
The biggest takeaway was that Jarrett Guarantano didn’t make any of the mistakes that have plagued his college career. Missouri is a mess, and it isn’t all just because they played Alabama. I see Guarantano as more of a cash play. Tennessee will likely just let Guarantano manage the game. They don’t need to take risks to win this one.
Skylar Thompson might be a trap. He pads his stats against Oklahoma. He hasn’t looked all that great against anyone else the last two years. That said, this Texas Tech defense was mauled last weekend. Thompson could be a nice value once again.
Max Duggan is a great play for the price against Texas. He’s no Alan Bowman, but his arm is good enough to take advantage of a Texas defense that was ravaged by Texas Tech. TCU isn’t going to win this game, but this is DFS. We don’t care. Duggan should score in the mid-20’s which is huge for his price. Remember that Duggan’s 21 points were in one half against Iowa State. There is good potential here.
Corral lit up Florida, so I love Collin Hill for the price once again. The Gators turned their offense up a notch against Ole Miss. The Cocks are going to have to throw a lot, and they have a QB capable of handling the volume. Hill is very nice at this price.
