NFL: Quarterbacks who deserve to be benched before Week 5

It’s a shame what has been allowed to happen with former USC Trojans star. Sam Darnold should have stayed in school to avoid being drafted by the hopeless disaster that is the New York Jets. Now in year three with Gang Green, it’s become increasingly apparent he just doesn’t have it to be their franchise quarterback going forward. The Jets are an awful 0-4 and he’s a big reason for that.
On Thursday Night Football vs. the previously winless Denver Broncos, Darnold went out there and was outdueled by Brett Rypien. Darnold completed 23-of-42 passes for 230 yards. While he didn’t throw any picks, he didn’t throw any touchdowns either. He got sacked six times, and though he an impressive 46-yard scamper to pay dirt, it was the Jets’ only offensive touchdown.
It’s only a matter of weeks before head coach Adam Gase is fired. The Jets are arguably the worst team in football, which puts them in position to potentially win the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, they still have Darnold on his rookie contract, playing for what is irrefutably the worst team in the AFC. He may still play, but he’s not what we though we was.

Darnold may miss some time with a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 4. Joe Flacco briefly came in for Darnold while he received some medical attention. At this juncture, Darnold has played his way out of the fifth-year option. By benching Darnold, the Jets might be able to salvage any semblance of trade value this former can’t-miss prospect still has left. It’s over in the Big Apple.
