Scouting Report. New England Patriots. 1. Pick Analysis. AFC East. . player. 47

Cam Newton and the entire offense completely hit the skids against the Denver Broncos, as Vic Fangio’s defense exposed how painfully thin the Patriots are at both wide receiver and tight end following Julian Edelman’s sharp decline and N’Keal Harry’s failure to take the next step.

Interestingly enough, the Patriots drafted two tight ends in quick succession this year in Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene, but neither has seen the field much. With Bill Belichick apparently not a fan of either of those two, the quickest fix to this passing game might be trading for Njoku and giving up a late-round selection.

Belichick and the Patriots have shown that they are willing to part with draft picks to acquire players like Mohamed Sanu that have considerably less upside than Njoku. While he has yet to really take off as a receiver, playing with a young quarterback under the watchful eyes of Hue Jackson, Gregg Williams, and Freddie Kitchens might have something to do with that.

With Belichick on the sideline and Newton under center, Njoku will have the best support system he’s had in his career to date, which could help him finally become the player many thought he would be at Miami.
