New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas

From a player who was tabbed as a future superstar for the New Orleans Saints to a current Saints superstar who may be shipped out.

It’s unclear if Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis actually have any intention of shipping out Thomas, who has been one of the most prolific pass-catchers in NFL history, statistically speaking, to this point in his career.

But he’s also fighting teammates. Due to injuries and disciplinary issues, Thomas has played in just one game this season, catching three passes for 17 yards. For a guy who missed just one game in his first four NFL seasons and caught 149 passes last season, that’s highly unusual.

Maybe Thomas needs a change of scenery. The Saints probably don’t want to think about trading Thomas right now, given how talented he is and how much they need to win now with Brees’ window closing, but they might have to. And the Packers could tempt them, especially if they realize he won’t cost an outlandish sum of draft picks due to the disciplinary issues.

The big issue with Thomas is cost, seeing how he signed a five-year deal worth just under $100 million. But he’s worth that kind of money when looking at his play on the field. Thomas is one of the NFL’s best route-runners and most physical receivers both before and after the catch. His slant routes are legendary.

He’d bring something different to the table for the Packers and would be a totally different type of modern-day possession receiver whom Rodgers has never played with. Imagine Rodgers hooking up with a guy who has never caught fewer than 90 passes in a season in his career. Is there enough volume to go around in the offense for that? There had better be, and with another star receiver, the Packers wouldn’t have to lean on Adams so much. As the Packers saw last year, if Adams goes down, the entire offense is in massive trouble.
