3 quarterbacks of the future the Bears should target
Jamie Newman – Georgia
Former Wake Forest quarterback Newman has not played a snap in 2020, a year where some expected him to improve his stock after transferring to Georgia.
However, his decision to opt-out of the season left Georgia in quarterback purgatory and will likely see Newman slide out of the first round.
That scenario could play into the hands of the Bears, providing they are willing to take a chance on Newman based on his 2019 film against ACC competition.
There is plenty of evidence from last year’s tape to suggest betting on Newman is a wise move.
Newman boasts an NFL arm and throws a superb deep ball with consistent accuracy and touch. He can gun the ball into tight windows and has the ability to alter his arm angle to manipulate the throwing lane.
Though not the same threat as Lance with the ball in his hands, Newman is a powerful runner who offers significant upside on short-yardage and in the red zone.
Improving his composure under pressure and doing a better job of reading second-level defenders will be crucial to Newman’s potential success in the pros.
After a year away from the field, Newman is unlikely to be ready to step in and start right off the bat. However, his physical tools are such that the Bears should give thought to drafting Newman on day two with a view to him taking the reins in the near future.
