NBA fans who love free-agent fireworks might find themselves disappointed by the 2020 offseason.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the NBA’s financial landscape, few teams were projected to have much salary-cap space, and even fewer star free agents were set to hit the open market. If Gordon Hayward, DeMar DeRozan and Andre Drummond pick up their respective player options, there likely won’t be many bidding wars in free agency.

Teams in need of a major roster shakeup will instead have to turn to trades.

As some teams gear up for a playoff push, others will plunge into a rebuild. Forward-looking general managers could attempt to shed money ahead of a 2021 free-agent class that could feature Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.
