Choosing Herbert over Burrow is tough. It was a coin flip, but Herbert has impressed me more this year. Whether it be that he takes more risks and chucks it deep more, yes that could be it, but he has been impressive. For the record, both of these players have been impressive. It’s a shame that the Chargers defense can’t stop anyone so it leads to Herbert being in plenty of shootouts.
One part of Herbert’s (and truthfully, Burrow’s) game is his ability to run. He’s more athletic than what he gets credit for. Herbert averages almost 30 yards rushing per game and often times that can be the difference in extending a drive or not.
The reason I have Herbert as #1 is that he had to take up this job on the fly. When Tyrod Taylor was injured, Herbert was thrust into the starting lineup. Thrown straight into the fire and told to make it work. He didn’t have the whole offseason to prepare as the starter of his NFL team. He was going into it as a backup trying to learn as much as he could from the veterans.
This race will be neck and neck as the season moves on.
