3 teams who should trade everything to get Bill Belichick
1. Houston Texans
The Texans are headed for a reset after admitting it was a mistake to give Bill O’Brien dual duties as head coach and general manager. Offseason trades (J.J. Watt?) may help recoup some of the draft capital O’Brien gave up so easily, but a new general manager and head coach (not the same person) is coming.
Let’s not get it twisted — Belichick has been the Patriots’ de facto GM. But multiple front office executives have made the jump to bigger roles elsewhere, with mixed-to-bad results not that much better than Belichick’s coaching tree when they’ve become head coaches.
Next in line to leave New England for the “greener pastures” of a front office gig elsewhere is Nick Caserio. The Texans have tried to get him, only to be rebuffed amid the Patriots’ threat of a tampering investigation, but it’s easy to point to them trying again. The New York Giants may look toward Caserio if they fire GM David Gettleman.
There’s a scenario where the Texans finally pay off their interest and hire Caserio as their new general manager without complications. Could his first big move be a trade to bring Belichick with him to Houston? A lack of high-end draft pick capital is a big issue, thanks to Belichick coaching tree member O’Brien’s misadventures as GM. But the idea of Belichick to the Texans can’t be completely dismissed, with Deshaun Watson in place as the franchise quarterback to serve as a nice jumping-off point.
