2. Deshaun Watson gets an extra four seconds

Watson connected on a long touchdown pass to Will Fuller in the third quarter of Houston’s narrow win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. On the surface, all seemed fine with a rather predictable result. Watson is an elite quarterback, and Fuller his emerging No. 1 target. Nothing to see here. However, giving Watson an extra four seconds to snap the football is problematic.

Perhaps the officiating crew lost track of the game clock and/or play clock, but that was never relayed to anyone of the field of play. Houston would win this game by two points after Jake Luton’s heroic efforts fell just short for Jacksonville. Those seven points, scored after a penalty should’ve been called, loom large.

It’s rare for such an overlooked part of an official’s job to end up on this list, as NFL officiating is the highest level of its craft. Mental errors such as the one seen above don’t happen often, and for that we’re grateful. But it’s a must to call it how we see it.
