3. Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox suffered through a disastrous 2020 campaign which means they’ll make significant changes this offseason. Boston would love nothing more than to weaken their arch-rivals by stealing away one of their best, and most popular players.

They also happen to have a legitimate need to upgrade the second base position. Jose Peraza manned the spot for Boston last year but his .225 batting average illustrates just how weak he is at the plate. Signing LeMahieu would give the Red Sox a boost on offense and defense over what they enjoyed at the position last year.

The biggest question the Red Sox front office needs to answer is whether or not second base is where they need to spend their money the most. The starting rotation almost certainly needs a complete overhaul. It’s possible that Boston will lack the free agency cash to fix both their rotation and infield in the same offseason. If that’s the case, look for pitching to be their first priority.

If they do look to strengthen their group of position players, LeMahieu is worthy of a significant contract offer. The Red Sox need a serious infusion of talent if they want to achieve relevance in 2021. Stealing LeMahieu away from the Yankees could be just the spark Boston needs to climb back into the postseason mix.
