The Philadelphia 76ers need to add more shooters and ball-handlers this offseason. These five free agents could help fill some of those holes.

After handing out a combined $289 million to Al Horford and Tobias Harris last summer, the Philadelphia 76ers find themselves in dire financial straits.

Barring a drastic roster shakeup, the Sixers will likely enter free agency more than $15 million over the $132.6 million luxury-tax line for the 2020-21 season. That means they’ll only have the $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception at their disposal, which will limit their free-agent options.

The odds of luring an impact player such as Goran Dragic, Joe Harris or Davis Bertans at that price are approximately nil. Although few teams will have significant salary-cap space this offseason, some other contenders can outbid the Sixers by dangling their $9.3 million non-taxpayer MLE.

New team president Daryl Morey is among the league’s most creative executives, so we can’t rule out a bigger splash. But if he keeps the Sixers’ core in place, he’ll likely be forced to bargain-hunt in free agency.

Adding more shooting and ball-handling should be among Morey’s top tasks this offseason as he looks to round out his roster around Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The following five players may be among his best free-agent bets.
