Pick Analysis. . 3.. 10. Scouting Report. AFC South. Houston Texans. player

The Houston Texans admitted the foolishness of giving head coach Bill O’Brien general manager duties earlier this season. Acting GM Jack Easterby and interim head coach Romeo Crennel are not long-term answers in their respective posts, so complete turnover is coming. Whether the right choices are made is a different conversation, with Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported the hiring of search firm Korn Ferry. But it does seem the Texans are putting things in the right order, with an eye on outside general manager candidates first. That new GM would then lead the hiring of the new head coach.

O’Brien gutted Houston’s draft pick capital in a litany of ill-advised trades, as a GM trying to serve a win-now head coach master as of course the same person. Trades of some highly-paid veterans (J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus, etc.) this offseason would help recoup some of those draft picks.

Compared to other teams who will be looking for a new GM or head coach after the season, the Texans have the selling point of a franchise quarterback in Deshaun Watson. That will also allow for moves to fill other holes, without having to be desperate to secure a potential answer under center–their answer is in place and not going anywhere.

If he even entertains leaving Ohio State, Day may not want to step into a full-on NFL rebuild. The Texans aren’t in that position to the same level other teams will be. The new people coming into key roles will be set to lead a quick return to contention, even with the challenges ahead to build the other 52 spots on the roster. Among NFL head coaching opportunities he might think about, Houston may appeal to Day the most.
