Pick Analysis. player. 42. Scouting Report. NFC West. . San Francisco 49ers. 1

Kyle Shanahan sold his soul to the devil to get his brilliant offensive mind and play-calling feel, and the football gods have decided to curse him by giving him a quarterback incapable of throwing deep down the field or holding the ball for too long in Jimmy Garoppolo. While Garoppolo put up solid numbers last year, it’s clear that Shanahan very rarely takes the training wheels off on offense. When you’re as well-paid as Garoppolo is, that’s a problem.

If the 49ers want to swap Jimmy G for a more experienced option with better arm strength, Stafford could be the man for the job.

The last time Shanahan had a quarterback he clearly felt confident in opening up the playbook for was Matt Ryan, and he helped turn him into an MVP. Making this trade would essentially be swapping one big contract for another in the eyes of the front office, but Stafford has seen consistently above-average play wasted by poor infrastructure around him. While his division will be tough, he won’t be surrounded by a bunch of underqualified coaches like he was in Detroit.
