Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. were entertaining, but Tyson stole the show and showed flashes of his former greatness. What’s next?

Former boxing champions Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. returned to the ring in an exhibition after years away from boxing. They fought admirably, but Tyson showed that he still has something left to offer in a boxing ring.

Tyson and Jones fought eight two-minute rounds and went the distance. The 54-year-old Tyson looked much better than the 51-year-old Jones, but there was no official scoring for the fight. A panel of former boxers scored it a draw, but Tyson was clearly the victor.

Jones looked very winded for most of the fight, which took place in Los Angeles’s Staples Center with no spectators other than those working the fight. Tyson showed quick feet, good head movement, and his trademark powerful punches.

Jones relied on holding Tyson to survive the fight, but the fight and the night as a whole exceeded expectations. It was a win for both men and all of boxing. Triller made a big splash with their boxing production debut, and musical interludes helped pass the time.

This fight was branded as a kickoff event of sorts for Tyson’s Legend’s Only League, which features former sporting greats taking part in the athletic events that made them famous.

Tyson said before the fight that he felt a hunger to fight again for fun and charity. He came into the Jones fight at a svelt 220 pounds, which is around where he fought during his glory years. He said after the fight that he wants to continue fighting in exhibitions.

Mike Tyson can still fight, so look for him to enter in another exhibition bout

The question is, who will be Tyson’s next opponent?

Former Tyson foe and heavyweight great Evander Holyfield has called out Tyson on numerous occasions and has been in training too. He’s in excellent physical condition and would make for a bigger event than Jones.

Tyson lost twice to Holyfield back when they were active professionals. Holyfield stopped Tyson via TKO in 1995. In the rematch, Tyson famously bit off Holyfield’s ear in the rematch which caused his disqualification. A trilogy bout would be very marketable, especially after Tyson’s successful performance against Jones.

Others, including former MMA fighter Tito Ortiz and boxer Shannon Briggs, have called Tyson out, but Holyfield makes the most sense. Tyson made a reported $10 million for Jones. He would make even more for Holyfield.

Will we get a Tyson vs. Holyfield trilogy matchup next? Keep your eyes posted on Tyson’s social media for future announcements. They may only be exhibitions, but Tyson struck gold with his idea, and he can still fight.
