3 teams that should take a chance on Kyle Schwarber
By Scott Rogust
The Minnesota Twins have been known for their ability to out-slug the competition in the past two regular-seasons. However, they’re in quite a conundrum this offseason.
After the suffered a humiliating sweep in the AL Wild-Card Round against the Houston Astros, they now watch star slugger Nelson Cruz hit the open market. A reunion doesn’t appear to be in the cards, as Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports that the two are in “a staring contest where neither side is blinking.” It’s going to take awhile for Cruz to find a landing spot, as it’s unknown if there will be a universal designated hitter in both leagues. If the designated hitter position returns to the NL in 2021, Cruz will receive a plethora of lucrative contract offers.
Sure, Cruz is 40-years-old and will turn 41 next July, but he still put up unreal numbers this past season. Cruz slashed .303/.397/.595 with 16 home runs and 33 RBI through 53 games with the Twins.
If the Twins ultimately lose out to the highest bidder, Schwarber can be a solid contingency plan. He’s 29-years-old, can play the corner outfield if need be and serve as their primary designated hitter. The Twins better be keeping in contact with him, just in case Cruz’s departure is confirmed.
