2. Detroit Tigers

The arrival of AJ Hinch as the team’s manager moved up the Detroit Tigers window for contention considerably. The Tigers rich farm system is near ready to compete at the major league level, with the likes of Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal making their MLB debuts in the shortened 2020 season. Adding a backstop like Contreras to work with their young pitching makes all the sense in the world.

But the main reason the Tigers should trade for Contreras is that they don’t have a legitimate catching prospect in the system. Detroit hasn’t loved what they’ve seen in Jake Rogers, and Chris Illitch isn’t in the business of spending for a young talent like Realmuto. Contreras comes at a cheaper price and would only cost some of their prospect capital, if Avila is done hoarding that unproven talent.

A package around the likes of Isaac Paredes or even Matt Manning, should the Cubs insist, might be what it takes to get Contreras to rock the ol’ English D.
