Just like the team discussed on the last slide, the New York Giants, the Washington Football Team entered this season appearing to be a team walking into year-one of a rebuild under a new head coach. Instead, like the Giants, Washington has battled through adversity and is now currently battling the Giants for the NFC East title.
Washington has endured quite a bit. Ron Rivera has been on the sideline throughout the season even while he underwent cancer treatment, and Alex Smith has miraculously battled back from his horrific leg injury to now lead the team down the stretch.
Rivera turned to Smith after the benching of Dwayne Haskins and Kyle Allen sustaining an injury.
Rightfully so, it has taken Smith a bit to get reacclimated to life as an NFL quarterback. He has completed a high percentage of passes, and he threw for over 300 yards in back-to-back weeks in Weeks 9 and 10.
Smith has been sacked quite a bit, especially during his return to action in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams where he was brought down six times. He has also not thrown for a substantial number of touchdowns just yet, but that might change with more reps and a matchup with the Seattle Seahawks this week.
Highlighting the Seahawks’ struggles on defense seems to a weekly reoccurrence in this series of articles, but those deficiencies on defense for Seattle are the exact reason Smith could be a viable start this week.
Seattle’s defense has allowed quarterbacks to go for big fantasy days, and Smith should be able to tally a touchdown or two at home. As mentioned above, Smith has shown he can compile the yards, he just needs to increase the touchdown numbers.
Smith has weapons such as Terry McLaurin, Logan Thomas and J.D. McKissic. If Antonio Gibson is healthy to go, Smith’s potential for a huge day increases.
