Just because the Steelers don’t project to have a high first-round pick doesn’t mean they can’t address the quarterback position through the draft. The depth of quality prospect in this year’s class gives Pittsburgh a great chance to snag a talented prospect at the end of Round 1.

Newman is one prospect that was generating a lot of first-round buzz before his decision to opt-out of the season for Georgia. The former Wake Forest star has a big arm and the sort of mobility that could add an extra dimension to the Steelers offense. He won’t be ready to play right away, but that’s an acceptable circumstance for a team that wants to give Roethlisberger at least one more season as their starter.

It’s even conceivably that Newman or a prospect of similar quality could fall into the middle rounds of this year’s draft. The Steelers front office should evaluate every quarterback prospect outside of Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields in this year’s class. Literally, any other signal-caller could experience a surprising freefall this year.

The Steelers are in a position where they can still exercise some patience at the quarterback position. Selecting a talented, but somewhat raw prospect in this year’s draft could position Pittsburgh well for the future at the game’s most important position.
