The Steelers need to start making plans for life after Ben Roethlisberger. Here are three under-the-radar quarterbacks Pittsburgh could acquire for 2021.

It’s very possible that Ben Roethlisberger will begin the 2021 season as the starting quarterback for the Steelers. The team’s front office still needs to move quickly to find his successor in the offseason. Pittsburgh’s lack of potential cap space or a high draft pick means they’ll need to look at under-the-radar options to become Big Ben’s successor.

Fortunately for Mike Tomlin and his coaching staff, they have plenty of offensive talent on the roster to support a relatively unproven signal-caller. This team doesn’t need to acquire a ready-made superstar to remain relevant. Unearthing a hidden gem to take over for Roethlisberger can keep Pittsburgh in the hunt for a Super Bowl title.

Here are three under-the-radar options Pittsburgh should take a look at before the 2021 regular season kicks off.

3. Jameis Winston

Winston hasn’t been able to knock off Taysom Hill in New Orleans which increases the likelihood that he’ll hit free agency this offseason. The Steelers could easily look to give him a second chance to become an NFL starter.

Admittedly, Winston’s penchant for making costly turnovers is a quality that would grate Tomlin. On the other hand, Tomlin is just the sort of strong personality that might be able to keep Winston focused entirely on football. That’s a requirement for any team that wants to give Winston another opportunity to lead their offense.

The former Florida State standout might want to sign for a team that’s willing to guarantee him a starting spot in 2021, but that team might not exist. Landing with the Steelers as a backup with a legitimate chance to take over for Rothlisberger in 2022 could easily turn out to be Winston’s best option. It’s an outcome that could work out perfectly for the Steelers and the talented, but inconsistent quarterback.
