Phillies name former outfielder Sam Fuld as next GM
By Mike Luciano
Sam Fuld will be the next GM of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Philadelphia Phillies rightly decided that Matt Klentak wasn’t doing a good enough job of building a contender, and that realization earned him a one-way ticket out of town. While they hired former Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers architect Dave Dombrowski to oversee the retooling, they added one more well-respected voice into the equation in the form of Sam Fuld.
Fuld has agreed to be the next general manager of the Phillies, meaning he will work in tandem with Dombrowski in order to build the Phillies into a contender.
Sam Fuld has been considered for several front office and managerial jobs
Fuld, who carved out a solid eight-year career for himself as an outfielder known for his defense, joined the Phillies as a “player information coordinator: after he retired. Over the next four years, Fuld has become one of the most respected minds in the game, earning an interview for the Toronto Blue Jays’ managerial opening in 2018.
Fuld will be a name Boston fans will remember quite well, as he was almost named Red Sox manager before they reversed course and re-hired Alex Cora. Considering how Fuld has been considered for roles both on and off the field, that serves as a testament to his immense baseball knowledge, which should serve the Phillies well.
The Phillies have some stars in place, Bryce Harper obviously being the maypole around which the rest of the team revolves. However, filling up the rest of the roster in an offseason that could be restricted due to the penny-pinching ways of ownership could be a challenge. If anyone around the league has earned a shot of changing this around, it’s a cutting-edge mind in Fuld and a proven quality executive in Fuld.
