Michigan State faces off with Wisconsin in a huge game in the Big Ten.

Christmas basketball is here in the Big Ten, and the conference delivered an absolute gem to lead off its quadruple-header. Michigan State and Wisconsin are set to square off at the Breslin Center with a chance to make an early statement in the nation’s deepest conference.

The early going was positive for the Spartans, who exceeded expectations with a 6-0 start headlined by a massive road win against Duke in the Champions Classic. Michigan State rose all the way to No. 4 in the polls before crashing and burning at Northwestern on Sunday, losing 79-65 against a Wildcats team projected to finish near the bottom of the conference standings.

The big issue for Tom Izzo’s team was a massive discrepancy beyond the arc. Northwestern knocked down 10 3-pointers and shot 52.9 percent from the floor, naturally leading to questions about whether or not this was simply a hot-shooting night from the Wildcats or if there’s a flaw for opponents to exploit against the Spartans.

This game is also interesting for Wisconsin, which took care of business in its Big Ten opener by cruising past Nebraska over the weekend. The Badgers have looked brilliant for the most part this season, racking up seven double-digit victories and one two-point loss to Marquette.

A veteran and well-balanced rotation has made a massive difference for Wisconsin, which is taking advantage of continuity in a year where the learning curve for teams is heightened due to shortened training camps and preseasons. This contest could go a long way towards determining the Big Ten’s regular-season champion, so finding a way to win is critical for both sides.
