Here is what needs to happen for the Cowboys to win the NFC East in Week 17
By John Buhler
Yes, the Dallas Cowboys can still win the NFC East this season, somehow, some way.
In a season that went to hell in a hand basket before leaves even hit the ground, the Dallas Cowboys still have a halfway decent chance of winning the NFC East crown. Wait, how is this even remotely possible?
With the Washington Football Team losing to the Carolina Panthers minutes earlier and the New York Giants falling earlier in the day on Sunday to the Baltimore Ravens, a Dallas win over the Philadelphia Eagles kept the postseason dreams alive for America’s Team for yet another week. It is amazing that all four teams in the worst division in football were still alive this late into the year.
How do the Cowboys win the NFC East in 2020
A win over the Eagles eliminates Philadelphia from the divisional race. While a win over the Panthers would have won the NFC East for Washington outright, Dallas and New York remain alive heading into the final week of the season. At 6-9, the Cowboys would need a win over the Giants in Week 17 coupled with a Washington loss to Philadelphia to get in as the worst No. 4 seed ever.
The big key here is Washington has the head-to-head tiebreaker over Dallas, if it ultimately comes to that. So a win by Washington over the Eagles ensures that Ron Rivera’s team will be playoff bound in his first season in the nation’s capital. Though a win next week will help Dallas or maybe even New York get in, it all comes down to what happens when Washington plays Philadelphia.
The craziest part is a sub-.500 team is guaranteed to host a home playoff game this postseason.
