2020 Prospect of the Year: Charles Conwell (14-0, 11 KOs)

People tend to debate a lot over the term “prospect.” FanSided established its definition of a boxing prospect during our 2019 year-end awards.

“A prospect is an extremely high achieving boxer who has been a professional for three years or less,” as defined by the FanSided. “They need to make a significant impact on their division and are rated within the top 100 by Boxrec.com. Additionally, they can’t possess a major world title but are on the verge within the next year or two. They can’t be a prospect if they’re already a world champion.”

Three years seems a bit arbitrary, so four would also be doable. Undefeated super middleweight Edgar Berlanga has a lot of buzz for other boxing awards lists. He’s a good call at 16-0 with 16 KOs all in the first round.

The problem is there is another prospect out there who is also undefeated with a stronger 2020 ré sumé, and that’s super welterweight, Charles Conwell.

Conwell (14-0, 11 KOs) isn’t the one-punch knockout artist that Berlanga is, but he proved that he’s well-rounded and can box or end fights with power punches when needed. He went 3-0 in 2020, winning all his fights by stoppage.

Two of Conwell’s wins came against unbeaten opponents. He knocked out Wendy Toussaint in round 9 back in October with a right uppercut that broke Toussaint’s nose and forced him to take the 10-count.

Conwell followed that win up two months later with another round 9 stoppage of Madiyar Ashkeyev. Ashkeyev was Conwell’s toughest opponent to date, but the accumulation of punishment was too much for Ashkeyev.

Look for Conwell to do big things in 2021. He’s rated as the 15th best super welterweight in the world by Boxrec.com. One more big win should have him enter the top 10.
