2. Jets head coaching candidates: Chiefs OC Eric Bienemy

The fact that Bienemy doesn’t have a head coaching job yet is absurd. It seems quite likely that Bienemy’s work in aiding the development of Kansas City’s elite offense will land him a top coaching job this season and the Jets should be making a phone call as soon as they can to secure an interview.

Bienemy has had plenty of time to learn under one of the NFL’s best head coaches in Andy Reid, who hired him as the Chiefs’ running back coach when he first arrived in 2013. Reid promoted Bienemy to be his offensive coordinator in 2018 after Matt Nagy left for Chicago and the move proved to be a boon to the development of Patrick Mahomes, who has emerged as one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks.

That sounds like the resume of a coach the Jets should be very interested in hiring, especially since there is a good chance they will be drafting a quarterback like Justin Fields or Zach Wilson with the second pick in the draft. Bienemy has played a part in developing a star quarterback and could do the same in New York if they get the chance to hire him.

The problem for the Jets is that Bienemy should be highly coveted in this hiring cycle, where he could go with former Chiefs’ GM John Dorsey in a package deal to take over an organization. The biggest competition for the Jets for Bienemy may be Houston, which already has a franchise quarterback in Deshaun Watson and has the ability to pull off the Dorsey-Bienemy pairing to revamp their entire football operations.
