When a team has nothing to play for but still is finding success, it’s because of the love for a coach. It’s why the San Francisco 49ers’ defense has been going lights out to close 2020 with hopes of helping Robert Saleh land a gig.

Saleh was a hot name on the market after posting the No.1 defense in 2019. He’s well-respected by coaches but adored by his players. Even with multiple injuries on the defensive line and secondary, Saleh helped the 49ers post a top-five defense to end the year on a positive note.

Saleh’s relationship with his players will help entice them to Detroit. Nickel corner K’Waan Williams, cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon and safety Jaquiski Tartt are all expected to hit the market. The Lions’ secondary will need to improve after ranking 30th in average yards allowed.

In 2020, state legislators were trying to push for the Dearborn-native to take over as the next Lions coach. It’s a feel-good story that the city can get behind and Saleh fits the bill. This should be the first and potentially only call the Ford family makes in the coming weeks.
