NFL Twitter is trolling the Chargers for interviewing Jason Garrett

The Los Angeles Chargers requested an interview with Jason Garrett, and NFL fans couldn’t help but make jokes.
The NFL regular season has reached its conclusion, which means that the 2021 coaching carousel has officially begun. There are six head coach vacancies entering the new league year, one of which being the Los Angeles Chargers, who parted ways with Anthony Lynn on Monday morning.
Following this news, the Chargers had requested interviews with the likes of Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley.
We can now officially add one more name to the list, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, and that’s New York Giants offensive coordinator and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett. And of course, Cowboys fans couldn’t help but make fun of the Chargers for their request.

Garrett was Cowboys head coach over a year ago
As has been the case ever since Garrett took over as head coach of the Cowboys, he’s been the subject of jokes on social media for his shortcomings with the team.
After taking over Dallas’ head coaching job midway through the 2010 season, Garrett had compiled an 85-67 record over 9.5 seasons, while leading the Cowboys to the playoffs three times. Not to mention he won the NFL’s Coach of the Year in 2016. However, Garrett was never able to take the Cowboys past the Divisional Round during his tenure. After an 8-8 finish to the 2019 season, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones parted ways with Garrett to hire Mike McCarthy, who has been a mixed bag in his first season.
Garrett would find a new gig as offensive coordinator for the Giants, the team he used to suit up for as a quarterback from 2000 until 2003. He was tasked with the goal of helping develop young quarterback Daniel Jones and the offense as a whole. Garrett didn’t necessarily do that.
New York’s offense ranked 31st in total offense (299.6 total yards/game), 29th in passing (189.1 yards/game), 19th in rushing (110.5 yards/game) and 31st in average points per game (17.5). As for Jones, he completed 62.5-percent of his passes for 2,943 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. If there was one positive about Garrett’s work with Jones, it’s that he drew up plays that allowed the former sixth-overall pick to run. This season, Jones rushed for 423 yards and one touchdown on 65 carries.
Will the Chargers actually hire Garrett to be their head coach and to further develop Justin Herbert? It’s too early to tell. But if you asked Giants fans, they’d personally send general manager Tom Telesco letters of recommendation to get him the job, but they would be far from genuine.
