This one will hurt Lions fans, but it’s been a long time coming.

Matthew Stafford is an aging quarterback who has some juice left in the tank. That means he’s valuable on the open market for teams who feel they’re “a quarterback away” from contending. The Lions have the quarterback but virtually nothing else, specifically on the defensive side.

Twelve years with the franchise and there’s little for Stafford to show for it. He doesn’t have a division title, nor a playoff win. He’s tallied over 46,000 passing yards and 300 touchdowns but is 74-93-1 as a starter. All he wants to do is win and that won’t happen for a long time with his current club.

A new coach wants their team built their way. If Stafford isn’t a part of the plan, he’s worth something via trade. And with four quarterbacks that could be franchise guys in the top 10, Detroit has to consider moving on.

The 32-year-old Stafford has given everything to the Ford family, including nearly his back. It’s time for the family to reward him by letting the veteran join a contender.
