At the very least, the 49ers organization plans to “evaluate” other options at the quarterback position this offseason. It’s possible Jimmy Garoppolo returns as the team’s starter next season, but the lack of guaranteed money left on his contract makes moving on from him a potentially painless decision for San Francisco.

It’s easy to make the argument that adding Watson to the 49ers’ star-studded roster could serve as the final piece towards the Super Bowl puzzle for Kyle Shanahan and his coaching staff. The defense already has the talent required to make a deep postseason run. Burgeoning offensive talents like Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk lay a solid foundation for the offensive to ascend to the same plane with better play from the quarterback position.

Watson may not be a perfect fit for Shanahan’s offensive scheme, but don’t expect that to dampen San Francisco’s interest in his services. Shanahan is a coach who can adapt his system to fit the talent of his personnel. He would jump at the chance to coach a unique talent like Watson.

The 49ers might have to mortgage their future in terms of draft assets to get a Watson trade done, but it’s time for San Francisco to go all-in in their pursuit of a Super Bowl title. Doing so would require giving up on Garoppolo, but that’s a small price to pay for greatness at quarterback.
