The thought of Bill Belichick landing Watson in a trade is enough to make neutral NFL fans shudder in horror. It’s also a perfect solution for New England’s issues at the quarterback position.

The gamble on Cam Newton was a risk worth taking, but it clearly hasn’t worked out. The Patriots missed the playoffs for the first time in ages and don’t appear to have a starting quarterback for 2021 on their current roster. Jarrett Stidham is not the answer in New England.

Adding Watson as well as several big-name opt-outs from the 2020 season would drastically improve the Patriots’ roster talent moving into 2021. It’s a fair question whether or not it would be enough to overtake the Bills in the AFC East, but it would be hard to bet against Belichick with an offensive weapon like Watson keying his offense.

Making a big move for an expensive quarterback may not seem like a Belichick-type move, but it’s time for New England to really shake things up to give their Hall of Fame coach the tools he needs to compete for championships once again. Watson isn’t similar to Tom Brady in terms of style, but he’s another All-Pro quarterback that can return New England to rarified air as a title contender.
