3 free agents for Washington Football Team to target this offseason
2. K.J. Wright
The idea of Wright leaving Seattle may sound crazy to some NFL fans, but the fact that the Seahawks spent a first round pick on Jordyn Brooks to replace him in last year’s draft speaks volumes about the team’s intentions. It’s very possible Wright will be looking for a new home when his team’s playoff run ends.
Washington has a clear hole to fill at middle linebacker after Thomas Davis announced his intentions to retire. Wright has played the majority of his career on the outside, but his declining speed makes a move to middle linebacker a prudent way to prolong his time as a quality NFL starter.
Wright isn’t going to solve Washington’s linebacking issues over the long haul, but he would give Rivera another great veteran to deploy as an on-field mentor for the team’s young defensive talent. This team already has the makings of a ferocious front seven if they can elevate their linebacking corps slightly in the offseason.
Wright may not immediately warm to the idea of taking his talents all the way across the country, but Washington has the cap space required to make the move a financial no-brainer. He’s just the sort of player Rivera loves to coach and that makes it easy to envision Wright suiting up for Washington next year.
