Alex Smith undecided on NFL future after Washington playoff loss

Alex Smith is considering his next move after an amazing 2020 season.

Just months after nearly two dozen surgeries and being told he could’ve lost his life, Alex Smith helped lead the Washington Football Team to the postseason. Unfortunately, Ron Rivera’s pixie dust ran dry in the postseason, and the loss has Smith considering if playing football in 2021 and beyond is in his best interest.

After Washington crashed out of the postseason following Smith’s deactivation against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Smith made it known that he will take some time to decide on what he plans to do in the future.

Alex Smith’s performance started to falter during the last few games of the season

While the immaturity of Dwayne Haskins and injury to Kyle Allen forced Smith back into the starting lineup, as he threw more interceptions than touchdowns. Taylor Heinicke, a much more mobile quarterback, looked more effective against Tampa Bay than Smith has looked during most of the season, only further solidifying the fact that the Washington offense needs a new quarterback next year.

With Washington mentioned as a potential landing spot for several big-name veteran quarterbacks that could be on the move, not a single soul would have a problem if Smith hung it up after a fantastic career. Given his football IQ and respect within the league, moving into coaching is definitely a possibility, especially considering how great the Dallas Cowboys offense has been after Kellen Moore traded in his cleats for a headset.

The fact Smith can even walk normally, let alone play quarterback in the NFL and win a division with an undermanned team, is a minor miracle. Whatever he decides to do next will be met with wholehearted support from the rest of the NFL.
