NFL Draft: 3 teams that should do whatever it takes to draft Justin Fields
By John Buhler
If you traded up for Mitchell Trubisky, you can do it for the better pro prospect
If the Chicago Bears were smart, they would get rid of their general manager Ryan Pace, their head coach Matt Nagy and their underwhelming quarterback duo of Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles and start over. It does not matter that they were a playoff team. This team’s offense was so hopelessly bland that not even an exciting Nickelodeon simulcast could make them interesting.
Few teams in the NFL know less about what to do at the quarterback position than the Bears historically. They did not even like Jay Cutler, yet he is arguably their best signal-caller since Pro Football Hall of Famer Sid Luckman. But you know what? All it takes is one quarterback to change the narrative. Do whatever it takes and get into the top-three to draft the next Steve Young.
The Bears will be picking at No. 20 in the 2021 NFL Draft. It may take a series of trades to climb that high, but the hard work will pay off. Sure, the Bears might stink early in Fields’ career, but he will be on his rookie contract and a smart general manager could use the salary cap to bring in the right free agents to help turn this franchise around. Fields at least make the Bears interesting.
What 2020 told us more than anything in Chicago is if you do not have a strong starting quarterback, you have no chance of winning in January. You cannot keep finishing last in the NFC North in that department. So if you can trade up from No. 3 to No. 2 for no reason to take Trubisky over Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, a precedent has been set. Trade up again and draft Fields.
What teams could trade up to No. 2 or No. 3 to select Fields out of Ohio State in 2021 NFL Draft?
