Drew Pomeranz

When Drew Pomeranz was a young, promising pitcher on the Red Sox back in 2017, he was still attempting to be a front-of-the-rotation starter. His 2017 season was spectacular, but outside of that he was never really a great starting pitcher. He hit rock bottom when he had a 6.08 ERA the very next season.

Last season, Pomeranz signed with the San Diego Padres as a full-time reliever. His four-year deal shows he’s committed to his new role.

Pomeranz allowed a three-run home run in the last game of the season which bloated his ERA to 1.45, but again, it took until his last appearance with the Padres to allow one run. Then, he allowed no earned runs during the playoffs.

So, in 25 total appearances, Pomeranz only allowed runs in one game. Meanwhile, the Red Sox had Phillips Valdez in the ‘pen, and that’s about it. Matt Barnes and his 4.30 2020 ERA is slated to be the team’s closer. That’s rough.

Will the Padres, who are going on one of the biggest “all in” binges in recent memory, be willing to give up their best reliever? Probably not, but stranger things have happened. The Red Sox need to find players who can play, and the Padres could talk themselves into Emilio Pagan if Pomeranz starts slow.
