New Texans head coach David Culley will end ‘talk about’ questions forever
By John Buhler
David Culley will answer any question you ask him as the Houston Texans coach. . .in depth.
During David Culley’s introductory press conference as the next head coach of the Houston Texans, he single-handedly killed the “talk about” question premise from ever being use again.
The Texans organization transcribed all 12 questions asked as his introductory presser. When he was asked about the working relationships that got the 65-year-old, first-time head coach to this point, you could have filled an entire encyclopedia set with his response. In another profession, Culley would have made a fantastic United States Senator because the man can filibuster.

From now on, Texans beat reporters will be especially careful when asking Culley a question. He will more than elaborate when given the chance. While it sure beats the alternative of him going all Belichickian or Popovichian with one-word responses, there are not enough hours in a day to allow Culley to pontificate on any subject he desires. He is not a politician, he is a football coach!
Typically, “talk about” questions are frowned upon in journalism for so many reasons. They show a lack of professionalism and frankly, a lack of preparation. Let Friday afternoon’s press conference involving Culley serve as an ever-present reminder of what can go wrong when asking that type of question. This is what you sign up for when you ask a first-time head coach about his career.
The Texans have a lot of problems, but having a soft-spoken head coach sure is not one of them.
