Miami Dolphins free agency 2021: Top 5 targets
4. Leonard Williams
The Giants will make every effort to retain Williams in free agency, but there’s a solid chance he escapes the clutches of Dave Gettleman. If he does, plenty of teams will be interested in his ability to positively impact their defensive line.
The knock on Williams is that he’s not an elite pass-rusher. That’s a fair criticism. He’s never graded out as anything more than an average edge rusher by PFF during his professional career.
Where Williams does excel is in his ability to plug up opposing run games at the line of scrimmage. He’s got a massive frame that makes him very difficult for an interior lineman to move at the point of attack. Williams’ surprising quickness for a man of his size also permits him to knife into the backfield and stop running backs before they’re able to generate any momentum.
Williams fits into Miami’s scheme neatly as a defensive end who can set a quality edge against the run game. He won’t generate double-digits sacks for the Dolphins, but that shouldn’t define his potential value. The Dolphins shouldn’t get pulled into a bidding war for Williams, but he could represent an excellent fit if the price is right.
