Packers free agency rumors, Gerald Everett
LANDOVER, MD – OCTOBER 11: Gerald Everett #81 of the Los Angeles Rams runs with the ball after making a catch in the first quarter against the Washington Football Team at FedExField on October 11, 2020 in Landover, Maryland. (Photo by G Fiume/Getty Images) /

2. Gerald Everett

Everett enters free agency as arguably the No. 2 tight end in his class behind Hunter Henry. Similar to the way the Packers should approach the wide receiver position, they should also avoid the temptation to settle for a second-tier option at tight end.

It should be Henry or bust for Green Bay in free agency. Everett is a decent player, but he’s not a significant upgrade over what the Packers currently have with Robert Tonyan. Adding him to the mix would only give Matt LaFleur a bit more positional flexibility for the 2021 season.

Everett’s inability to make meaningful plays in the red zone should be a major warning sign for teams interested in his services. He only managed one touchdown out of his 41 receptions a season ago. The fact that opposing secondaries can shut him down near the goal line accurately illustrates his lack of explosion.

Everett is going to get overpaid in free agency due to the scarcity of available talent at the tight end position. The Packers don’t need to give a large contract to someone who doesn’t drastically upgrade their roster. Everett just isn’t enough of a difference-maker to merit the sort of contract he’s going to receive.
