4. Washington Football Team

The team comes off a season in which it captured the NFC East for the first time since 2015. But Ron Rivera’s club pulled this off despite a 7-9 record.

Of course, veteran quarterback Alex Smith comes off a season in which he amazed the sports world by getting back on the football field nearly two years after suffering a leg injury that threatened to hamper his ability to walk, much less playing football again. When he was in the starting lineup, Washington won five times in six outings. But he also missed two games in Week 15 and 16, as well as the Wild Card game vs. the Buccaneers.

And the bottom line is that Smith will turn 37 years old in May. He’s one of four quarterbacks currently on the roster, including 2020 part-time starters Kyle Allen – an exclusive rights free agent – and Taylor Heinicke, who just signed a two-year extension (via Kevin Patra of NFL.com). There’s also Steven Montez.

So could the organization, with Martin Mayhew recently named general manager, make a play and open up the checkbook to add a division rival? There is certainly as need at the position and the instability behind center in recent years has been an issue. It’s a club that made strides on defense a year ago and Smith is inspirational. But it shapes up as an interesting offseason in Landover.
