Philadelphia Eagles free agency 2021: Top 5 targets
3. Richard Sherman
Sherman’s best days as a player are clearly behind him, but he can still hold up as a quality starting cornerback in the right scheme. That’s not a statement that describes many corners on the Eagles’ current roster.
Admittedly, Sherman’s lack of straight-line speed prevents him from shutting down elite receivers in single coverage. He needs safety help if he’s going to be asked to go toe-to-toe with top-notch opposing wideouts.
His length and understanding of the game do help cover up a lot of the issues associated with his lack of foot speed. Sherman is still outstanding at stopping short and intermediate routes when he has the safety support required to aggressively break on the ball.
The Eagles shouldn’t give him a long-term deal, but a one or two-year contract could help the team bridge the gap until they can find a younger corner with star potential. Sherman’s toughness would also give this defense some swagger it currently lacks.
