Green Bay Packers free agency 2021: Top 5 targets
3. Hunter Henry
Tight end isn’t necessarily a position of need for the Packers, but Henry’s talent should be too significant to ignore. He also happens to be a perfect marriage between the way the offense operates with Rodgers at the helm and how LaFleur will call plays after Rodgers retires.
Henry isn’t an elite pass-catching tight end, but he’s well above league average in that regard. What he lacks in blazing speed he makes up for with his length and willingness to make tough catches down the seam. Any offense that makes Robert Tonyan look like a dangerous weapon can do the same for Henry.
Henry’s willingness to contribute as a blocker in the run game is the quality that will appeal most to LaFleur. He wants Green Bay’s running game to be physical on the edge to set the playmakers in the backfield loose. Henry isn’t a road-grader as an in-line blocker, but he can really punish smaller corners when he’s flexed out into the slot.
The only problem with the Packers chasing Henry this offseason is that other tight end-needy teams might be willing to pay Henry like a superstar. If that happens, Green Bay needs to pass and move on to other needs. If Henry only gets paid like a very good player then the Packers should strongly consider making a strong bid for his services.
