Predicting the next 3 players to receive $300 million contracts
By Scott Rogust
SS Javier Baez
Javier Baez has to be ecstatic about the Tatis signing because now his price tag has increased.
Baez, like Lindor, is set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the upcoming season. Sure, the infielder is coming off a down 2020 campaign, but do not forget that Baez only had 60 games to play last year, so his statistics did take a hit. Even so, he did earn his first Gold Glove for his effort.
Back in 2018, Baez led the league in RBI with 111 and finished second-place in the NL MVP award race. The following year, he made the All-Star team for the second-consecutive season. The future is still very bright for the young infielder.
The real issue that remains is whether the Cubs will reward him with a contract. Chicago’s front office has taken a cost-cutting approach this offseason because they needed to free up money to try and pay the likes of Baez, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. Of course, it is nearly impossible to keep all three, but the most likely to stay would be Baez. But who knows, he could opt to hit the open market and cash out big time with a shortstop-needy team. Either way, Baez will get paid.
