The Washington Football Team will remain that next season but will have a new name in 2022.

After years of criticism over the racist nature of the nickname, Washington’s NFL franchise dropped its nickname and became the Washington Football Team last year. That name will be retained for the 2021 season, as the process of finding a permanent, less generic nickname is ongoing.

The process of the Washington Football Team’s name change will be documented through a newly-launched website called Washingtonjourney.com.

Here’s what the front page of the site says.

“We’ve transitioned from our old name. Now it’s time to write a new legacy,” “The future of Washington Football arrives in 2022.”

It’s a no-brainer to create interaction and buzz, but there’s a section where fans can submit ideas for the new nickname. Bleacher Report said Generals, Justice and Rhinos are among the early proposals. The most important part for a lot of fans will be the seemingly certain retention of the franchise’s classic burgundy and gold color scheme. Right after the previous nickname was eliminated, fans came out with some nicknames and rebrand ideas on social media. “Red Wolves” got some separate buzz as a possible nickname last summer.

Finding a new nickname is something that has to be done right, as it will be the outward mark of the Washington franchise’s legacy for decades to come. So credit to those who will make the decision in the organization for taking it slowly, and fleshing out the full process with a deliberate timeline in mind.

On the field, Washington won the NFC East in Ron Rivera’s first year as head coach last season. They are a team on the rise, with a credible and stable culture that is now in place.
