Phillies couldn’t even get through the first inning in spring training opener

The Philadelphia Phillies were so bad out of the gate, they could not complete the first inning.

The world is healing, as Philadelphia Phillies fans are already booing their team in spring training. If this does not signify the world returning to normal at some point in the not-so-distant future, nothing will.

In their spring training opener vs. the Detroit Tigers, the Phillies’ pitching staff threw a combined 50 pitches and allowed six runs in the first inning. The worst part is they only recorded two outs! Phillies fans let them have it, booing a bunch of guys who may not make the team to make up for not being able to boo Carson Wentz at the Linc last year. Oh, they got battery-throwing mad again!

The Philadelphia Phillies have not qualified for the postseason in a decade

Even with Bryce Harper’s big, fat contract, the Phillies are expected to finish no better than third in the NL East this season. Despite PECOTA hating the Atlanta Braves more than vegetarians hate meat, Atlanta should be the favorite to win the division for the fourth year in a row. With a great offseason, look for the New York Mets to push for a Wild Card berth under their new ownership.

Though we understand firmly that this game will not count, it is a truly poor tone-setter for how the upcoming campaign could go. Philadelphia is a long way from contending for a World Series. To do this, you need to record three outs at least nine times in a game. While the first two always come easy, that critical third one is perhaps the most important. Otherwise, the game never ends.
