Was Taxi Driver filmed in New York City?
It was one of the first films the now legendary Martin Scorsese directed as a young lad. This film is an award-winning production that’s arguably one of the best works by both De Niro and Scorsese.
The story takes the audience on a ride that unseemly comes unexpectedly. Travis Bickle (De Niro) suffers from insomnia and is a disturbed individual. He works by night as a cabbie driving one of those famous yet annoying yellow cabs. He works out of his office which is located on 57th Street along 11th Avenue. While the building is still there, parts of the original scenes are no longer in existence due to construction remodeling for the West Side Highway.
Scenes near Times Square also are shot for the film. Columbus Circle, located at 38th Street and 7th Avenue, also gets some screen time. It’s where he plans to shoot the presidential candidate at the rally. There are other scenes placed in lower Manhattan that seek to “rescue” a young Jodie Foster who plays a 12-year-old prostitute. This is a wild ride and certainly installed some concerns for regular cab passengers.
