5 players Broncos should draft in the first round
1. Patrick Surtain
Surtain is an enigma in this draft class as the one Alabama prospect who doesn’t seem to be enjoying enough attention at the moment. That should change as teams have more time to spend breaking down his collegiate film.
The simple fact that teams stopped throwing the ball at Surtain is the clearest indication of his quality as a cover guy. He’s got good size for the outside and also possesses the short of bursts in quick space that help break up intricate routes near the line of scrimmage.
His technique in the final third needs polishing, but there’s no reason he can’t become an elite man-to-man guy down the field given his athletic gifts. There may not be a ton of flash to Surtain’s game, but that’s just because he makes playing at a high level look so effortless.
Surtain is the No. 1 corner in this class and can fill a position of intense need for Denver. Landing him won’t be as sexy as rolling the dice on a new quarterback, but it could be the more prudent play for the Broncos in this year’s draft.
