Dallas Cowboys mock draft – Second Round

44. Scouting Report. CB. Florida State. Asante Samuel Jr. player. 123. Pick Analysis

Going with an offensive lineman in the first round means that Dallas opted to pass on help in the secondary. That need gets addressed here with Samuel, the son of former New England Patriots cornerback Asante Samuel.

Scouts may have some concerns about his 5-foot-10 frame which could cause Samuel to slide out of the first round, but he notably plays the position like a much bigger player. Samuel could make an impact immediately as a slot corner due to his speed but also has enough skill in his game to transition to playing on the outside in the next few years.

The Cowboys could use a slot corner now if they choose to save some salary cap space and move on from Anthony Brown, which would open up a role for Samuel to fill right now. Samuel could also be a long-term fixture in the secondary next to Trevon Diggs, another player with an NFL bloodline that Dallas took in the second round in 2020.

There is a question of scheme fit here too since Samuel is better as a man corner, something that could conflict with new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn’s system. The talent here is undeniable, however, so landing Samuel at 44 would be a coup for the Cowboys.
