NFL free agency: 5 difference makers still available for teams to sign
2. Anthony Harris
Safety isn’t the most glamorous position in the modern NFL, but Harris is still one of the best players at his position. His age (29) might prevent him from getting a lengthy deal in free agency, but he should be able to garner good money over the next two or three seasons.
Part of the concern about Harris as a player is just how perfect the Vikings defense was for his skillset. There are valid questions about how a move away from Mike Zimmer’s system might impact his play moving forward.
None of that should obscure the reality that Harris is one of the best coverage safeties in the league. He can be trusted to cover large tracts of land in the final third without any support. That’s a luxury most defensive coordinators don’t currently enjoy from the safety position.
The Vikings might still be in the mix to retain Harris, but it’s also possible he’s waiting for a better offer on the open market. Defenses who are one player away from elevating their secondary from good to great should place a serious call to Harris and his representatives.
