Dolphins saving money in free agency to make a run at Deshaun Watson
The Miami Dolphins haven’t spent aggressively in free agency thus far, which invites the notion they’re ready to make an offer for Deshaun Watson.
To this point this offseason, in free agency or trades, the Miami Dolphins have mostly made depth moves. Related specifically to the quarterback position, as they linger as a possible suitor for Deshaun Watson, they signed Jacoby Brissett to back up Tua Tagovailoa.
The Dolphins don’t have the cap space they had entering the 2020 offseason, but they are in a pretty good spot with money to spend if they want to. So why haven’t they been more aggressive? They couldn’t help not getting running back Aaron Jones, as he was determined to stay with the Packers, but the most notable moves may come in the draft. Having two first-round picks will line them up to add two premium talents.
Unless…
Are the Dolphins lining up for a run at Deshaun Watson?
According to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald, via Dolphin Nation, the Dolphins are “keeping their powder dry” with “the belief from NFL insiders it’s to make a run at Watson.”
The Dolphins have tried to maintain their faith and commitment to Tagovailoa, even if they have made a not very vailed effort to protect him from being easily replaced this year. But if there’s an opportunity to get Watson, which there is, it can’t be dismissed and it has to be pursued to the end. Miami has the draft capital, including and starting with the No. 3 overall pick they got from the Texans in the Laremy Tunsil trade, to get the trade done.
Watson’s seemingly growing legal situation may start to impact his trade market, and possibly the cost to get him. But it’s too early to know those things, and if or how the Dolphins’ interest might be impacted. But Watson still makes a lot of sense for them, and their tepid dips in free agency invites the idea they’re readying a trade offer the Texans’ won’t refuse.
