Oscar De La Hoya announces boxing return on Paul vs. Askren media call

Oscar De La Hoya made a surprise visit during the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren press conference hosted by Triller. He’s coming back to boxing. 

Oscar De La Hoya was a legendary fighter during his boxing career, and he just announced he’s coming back!

During the Friday, March 26 Triller press conference for the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren fight card, Oscar De La Hoya made a surprise visit. Rapper and Triller partner Snoop Dogg was on stage during the press conference when he brought out De La Hoya as a special guest.

The two chit-chatted for a moment about last week’s Virgil Ortiz Jr. boxing bout. Ortiz is promoted by De La Hoya’s company Golden Boy, but the conversation quickly shifted to De La Hoya.

De La Hoya came out and announced, “July 3, I’m making my comeback,” as he proceeded to drop the mic and walk off stage.

It was an unexpected and surreal moment.

No further details were shared about De La Hoya’s boxing future, but apparently, he is back on July 3.

The fact that De La Hoya made this revelation on a Triller stage with Snoop Dogg insinuates that he’s doing business with Snoop Dogg and his Triller Fight Club series. It’s an interesting move that makes sense.

Oscar De La Hoya is coming back to boxing, and it looks like he is working with Triller

Triller made waves in November when they produced the Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. exhibition match and fight card. Their show mixed the musical concert world with professional and celebrity boxing to high praise from boxing pundits.

De La Hoya didn’t say if his July 3 boxing match would be an exhibition or a professional bout, but he has recently shared his desire to return to professional boxing.

De La Hoya (39-6, 30 KOs) retired from boxing in 2008 after a 16-year professional career. He won titles in six different weight classes and was one of boxing’s biggest draws. Before he turned pro, he won a gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics giving him his nickname, “The Golden Boy.”

While his presumable partnership with Triller makes sense, it’s an interesting move since Golden Boy Promotions has a broadcasting deal with DAZN. During the Ortiz vs. Maurice Hooker bout last week, De La Hoya Tweeted a passive-aggressive message knocking DAZN for not having any executives at the fight.

His rift with DAZN could spawn from the legal fiasco that saw Canelo Alvarez exit Golden Boy only to walk into a partnership with DAZN and Matchroom Boxing.

Regardless, it looks like De La Hoya is returning to boxing alongside Snoop Dogg and Triller.
