Packers free agency rumors, Golden Tate

Tate struggled to live up to the expectations of being one of the Giants’ top aerial threats last season and as a result, was cut in a cost-cutting maneuver this offseason. That makes the former Notre Dame star a free agent wideout with a lot to prove.

The Packers would be smart to roll the dice on Tate as a potential option on the outside. He lacks ideal position to thrive on the perimeter, but he’s still produced above-average results on the boundary during his professional career.

He doesn’t have the speed to blow past opposing defenders anymore, but he’s got enough wiggle to create throwing lanes for Rodgers on intermediate routes. Throw in Tate’s above-average ability to produce yards after the catch and it’s easy to see how he can thrive in Green Bay.

Tate might have been looking for a modest multi-year deal when New York first let cut him loose, but the state of the current wide receiver market will depress his asking price significantly. The Packers should offer him a one-year, incentive-laden contract that gives him an opportunity to rehabilitate his value before hitting free agency against next year.

Green Bay and Tate could be a perfect match in NFL free agency.
